Have you ever dreamed of stepping inside a comic book? Well thanks to setdebelleza and his magical pop art world, 2B Art & Toys Gallery is offering the chance to walk among his mind-boggling and powerful artworks this summer. A gallery space is being turned into a series of animated and immersive symbols of immediate consumption and reflections of our contemporary society, all perfectly wrapped in his acidic and ironic universe. While preparing for the exhibition, we sat down with setdebelleza for a raw conversation about art.
2B: How did you start? Do you remember your first artwork or mural?
Setdebelleza: A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away….
2B: What inspires you?
Setdebelleza: Everything has inspiring potential, even the most insignificant.
2B: Why urban art and not another type of art?
Setdebelleza: I truly believe the street is the scene of life, from a neighborhood level, addressing local issues to communicating and spreading messages all over the world.
2B: Galleries, museums, or the streets?
Setdebelleza: All three, the essence is to choose the appropriate piece in each time and space.
2B: Tell us a place where you always wanted to paint a mural?
Setdebelleza: I’ve done a lot, but I’d really like to paint something big on the rooftop or parking surface to be seen from the sky by drone or satellite.
2B: If you wanted your message to reach a specific audience in a powerful and transcendent way, where would you make your work or where would you place it?
Setdebelleza: I think the audience is an integral part of the artwork, and an artist has to have his audience in mind when he is creating a piece of art. It doesn’t matter if you hang it or publish it online, it’s all about reaching specific groups.
2B: Which technique do you most identify with?
Setdbelleza: Just painting on the plane two-dimension surface, simple as that.
2B: If you weren’t an artist, what would you have been?
Setdbelleza: Nothing else, my life is my passion.
2B: Do you think that Street Art today has ceased to be transgressive?
Setdbelleza: Like all countercultural movements, it’s the irresistible attraction that makes street art an object of desire and a value to speculate. The creator’s message and intentions will prevail over all things.
2B: Do you listen to music when you paint? If so, which one?
Setdebelleza: I listen to music mainly from the 80s and 90s.
