“Street art is a tool that small people can use to say what they want to say”
Patcharapol Tangruen aka Alex Face is one of Asia's most acclaimed street artists. Alex Face, an influential and prominent Thai street artist, made his name worldwide through his iconic characters – babies in animal suits. He often depicts them with a third eye - The third eye in his drawings represents another dimension “it’s something that we can feel but can’t see with two eyes so I add the third eye which can see what we can’t”.
Through his often comic, decorative, and whimsical drawings, Alex Face creates art with a social conscience. Much of his art is intended to stimulate curiosity and make people think about their surroundings, encouraging viewers to question everything.
One of Alex’s most famous creation is the signature character ‘Mardi’, a big cartoonish bunny rabbit who has a child’s face and whose trials and tribulations are splashed across many of Bangkok’s walls. 'Mardi' often hides in the shadows, strides across open spaces, and peers around corners in a spectacular series of artwork that stretches across the city.
Alex Face studied architecture at King Mongktut Institute of Technology in Bangkok, Thailand. After getting a bachelor’s degree from the Department of Fine & Applied Arts, his fascination and curiosity in architecture took him to explore and wander the streets and alleys of Bangkok for abandoned buildings, buildings that he eventually used as an open canvas to develop his incredible street art and where he could express himself on a new level.
